THE COMPANY
Freehand Movement, and its children's arm Pungulu Pa Productions, is a Nairobi-based animation studio dedicated to creating high-quality content celebrating African stories, culture and heritage through fun and entertaining experiences.
One of Freehand Movement’s primary ambitions is to bridge the gap in quality contemporary African children's content and provide a platform for celebrating African stories and its cultural and natural heritage. The studio aims to expand our reach globally, producing engaging, culturally enriching content for African children worldwide.
Their flagship show, “Uli & Tata's African Nursery Rhymes,” is a 2D animated series that follows the adventures of a brother and sister discovering African nursery rhymes.
THE ENTREPRENEUR
Sarah Mallia is the co-founder of and creative producer of Freehand Movement, and its children’s arm Pungulu Pa Productions, two Nairobi-based digital arts and social impact studios dedicated to creating and disseminating, compelling, inclusive and culturally relevant content in the form of illustrated books, graphic novels and animation. She spearheads the production of diverse content, overseeing notable projects such as their flagship series “Uli & Tata’s African Nursery Rhymes”, and “JUA KALI Graphic Novel Series”, a groundbreaking collaboration between Nairobi and Cape Town artists and academics that aims to revolutionize academic research.
Before her current role, Sarah led an impact campaign for the award-winning Kenyan feature-length documentary The Letter, and held the role of Arts & Culture Programme Manager at PAWA254, an influential arts and activism hub based in Nairobi. She holds a Masters degree in Migration, Mobility and Development for the University of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
THE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Afrique Créative is supporting Freehand Movement in their ambition of becoming a leading force in the African children’s content industry.
With this support, they will develop their studio's capacity and produce the first episodes of their animated series Uli & Tata.
Their action plan includes the following steps:
